Learned on the Ground
In 1998, Kiran Pokhrel began his career at the heart of Himalayan luxury travel. Starting as a tour executive in Kathmandu, he learned every dimension of the business: designing bespoke itineraries, costing and negotiating with hotels, airlines, transportation providers and guides, corresponding with international agents, welcoming clients at the airport, delivering destination briefings, and hosting welcome and farewell dinners to set expectations and gather feedback. Working with international agents including SITA World Tours, TUI, Kuoni and SAGA Holidays, among others, he built a knowledge of the Himalaya that does not come from brochures — which lodge has the view worth the detour, which guide changes a guest's week, and what separates an adequate Himalaya journey from an extraordinary one.
Building on the Ground
This expertise crystallized into action. In 2008, Kiran founded E-tour Channel, a full-service Destination Management Company based in Kathmandu, handling everything from airport transfers to multi-week expedition logistics across the Himalayan region. In 2022, he launched Nepal Adventure Trail, an online journey trekking company. These ventures gave Kiran something few technology founders have: operational depth. He knows what happens when a helicopter can't fly due to weather at Lukla, when monsoon timing shifts unexpectedly, or when a restricted-area permit stalls a week before departure.
Fifteen Years Inside the Systems
Alongside the travel ventures, Kiran spent fifteen years on IT business-analyst consulting engagements, specifying and building the systems large organizations run on — Travelport, American Airlines and American Express Global Business Travel in travel and aviation, and Northern Trust and Starr Insurance in banking and insurance. Three of those sit at different layers of the travel industry: a global distribution system, a major carrier, and the world's largest corporate travel manager. The other two are regulated environments, where systems are held to a different standard of care.
It is an unusual combination, and it is the reason CuratedAscents is not a brochure with a chatbot attached. The person who knows which lodge has the better view also knows how to build the platform that remembers it.
