Once a year, in the third lunar month, the courtyard of Paro's fortress-monastery fills with masked dancers, silk brocade, and half the valley in its finest kira and gho. The Tshechu is not staged for visitors; it is Bhutan speaking to itself. This journey places you inside it — timed to the festival's final days and its rarest moment, the pre-dawn unfurling of the Thongdrel, a sacred silk thangka four storeys tall, displayed only in darkness and folded away before the sun touches it.
Around the festival we unfold western Bhutan itself: Thimphu's living capital, the subtropical valley of Punakha and its river-junction dzong, and the climb to Taktsang — the Tiger's Nest — with a private guide, your own car, and the valleys' finest small lodges throughout.

Day 1
Arrive Paro, and on to Thimphu
However you come — Bangkok, Singapore, Delhi, Kolkata or Kathmandu — the descent into Paro is an event in itself, the valley opening beneath the wing between forested ridges. Private welcome at the airport, then the drive to Thimphu; evening walk to the Memorial Chorten among the circumambulating faithful. Pemako Thimphu.
Day 2
Thimphu, the living capital
The colossal Buddha Dordenma above the valley, the weekend market's chillies and incense, the national Textile Museum, and an audience over butter tea at a private home — the capital as its residents live it. Pemako Thimphu.
Day 3
Over the Dochula, into Punakha
Across the Dochula Pass and its 108 chortens — on a clear morning, the whole eastern Himalaya on the skyline — descending through blue pine into Punakha's warm valley. Afternoon at Chimi Lhakhang among the rice terraces. COMO Uma Punakha.
Day 4
Punakha Dzong and the rivers
Bhutan's most beautiful building, moored like a ship at the meeting of the Mother and Father rivers, in jacaranda season. A traditional farmhouse lunch, and the suspension bridge walk above the Mo Chhu. COMO Uma Punakha.
Day 5
To Paro, as the valley gathers
Return west into a Paro humming with festival arrivals. Afternoon at Kyichu Lhakhang, one of the oldest temples in the Himalaya, and an evening fitting of your own gho or kira — worn to the festival, yours to keep. Taj Paro Resort & Spa, newly opened in 2026.
Day 6
The Tshechu
The festival, in full. A day in the courtyard of Rinpung Dzong at the masked cham dances — the Black Hats, the Judgement of the Dead — from a well-placed vantage our hosts arrange, with a festival picnic in the Bhutanese style. Day 7
The Thongdrel, and the Tiger's Nest
Before first light, join the valley beneath the great Thongdrel as blessings are given and the horns sound from the ramparts — the sacred silk unfurled only in darkness on the festival's final morning. Celebration breakfast, then the climb to Taktsang monastery, gripping its cliff nine hundred meters above the valley — taken at your pace, with tea at the halfway house. Day 8
Depart Paro
A last valley morning, then your flight out — with the mountains at the window once more.

Booking terms, in brief. A journey is reserved with a signed booking confirmation and a 35% deposit, non-refundable upon our written booking confirmation; the balance is due 90 days before departure. Quoted prices are guaranteed for 14 days from proposal.
Prices are per person, double occupancy, in US dollars; inclusions are exactly as this page states, and Bhutan's Sustainable Development Fee is included.
Cancellations, in writing, are subject to our published schedule: the deposit is retained to 91 days before departure; 50% at 90–61 days; 75% at 60–46 days; 100% at 45 days or fewer. One date change is free of our fees when requested more than 90 days out, for a departure within 12 months, subject to availability and cost differences.
If a named lodge or service becomes unavailable, we substitute equivalent category. Helicopter flights are weather-dependent; lost flights are rebooked within the journey at no charge, and if weather defeats every window we refund the helicopter component's published value.
Comprehensive travel insurance with helicopter evacuation cover, and our signed Assumption of Risk & Release, are conditions of travel on Nepal journeys. Domestic flight disruption within Nepal is managed and re-booked by our Kathmandu operations at no charge.
