Discover the jewel-toned turquoise Gokyo Lakes and summit Gokyo Ri for what many experienced trekkers consider the finest panoramic viewpoint in the Everest region. This quieter alternative to the classic EBC trek follows the Dudh Kosi valley past Nepal's longest glacier, staying in premium Khumbu lodges. The reward is a panorama encompassing four 8,000m peaks and five sacred glacial lakes.
Kathmandu → Lukla → Phakding → Namche Bazaar → Dole → Machhermo → Gokyo → Gokyo Ri → return → Namche → Lukla → Kathmandu
Arrive and transfer to luxury hotel. Trek briefing and welcome dinner.
Morning flight to Lukla. Begin trek descending along the Dudh Kosi to Phakding through pine forests and Sherpa villages.
Cross suspension bridges and climb through Sagarmatha National Park to Namche Bazaar. First glimpse of Everest on the ascent.
Acclimatization hike to Khumjung village (3,790m) and the Hillary School. Visit Syangboche airstrip and the Everest View Hotel. Explore Namche's cafes and market.
Leave the main EBC trail and head northwest up the Dudh Kosi valley toward Gokyo. Trek through Mong La pass with spectacular views of Ama Dablam, Kangtega, and Thamserku. Descend to the Phortse Tenga river crossing, then climb to the small settlement of Dole in a beautiful rhododendron forest.
Trek through Lhabarma and Luza — tiny summer settlements amid yak pastures. The views of Cho Oyu (8,188m) and Kangtega become increasingly dramatic. Arrive at Machhermo, a small cluster of lodges where the Himalayan Rescue Association sometimes has a medical post.
Climb the terminal moraine of the Ngozumpa Glacier and be rewarded with the first sight of the stunning turquoise First Lake (Longponga Tsho). Continue past the Second Lake (Taboche Tsho) to Gokyo village on the shore of the Third Lake (Dudh Pokhari), the largest and most sacred of the five lakes.
Pre-dawn ascent of Gokyo Ri for a sunrise panorama that rivals any in the Himalayas. From the summit, see four 8,000m peaks — Everest (8,849m), Lhotse (8,516m), Makalu (8,485m), and Cho Oyu (8,188m) — plus the five turquoise Gokyo Lakes and the massive Ngozumpa Glacier. Descend for a late breakfast. Afternoon at leisure by the lakes.
Day hike to the Fourth Lake (Thonak Tsho) and the remote Fifth Lake (Ngozumpa Tsho) along the glacier. The Fifth Lake at 5,000m is set in a dramatic amphitheatre with Cho Oyu looming above. Return to Gokyo for your final night by the lakes.
Retrace the trail south, descending past the lakes and the glacier moraine through Machhermo to Dole. The descent feels easy with altitude pressure relieved.
Continue descending through Phortse Tenga and over Mong La to Namche Bazaar. Celebration dinner at one of Namche's popular bakeries.
Final trek descending through Jorsale and Phakding to Lukla. Farewell dinner with your Sherpa crew.
