Day-by-Day Itinerary
Fly to Pokhara, Fly to Jomsom
Early morning flight from Kathmandu to Pokhara, connect to the dramatic mountain flight to Jomsom following the Kali Gandaki gorge. Arrive in Jomsom and stroll through the windy town. Afternoon exploration of the apple orchards and Thakali culture.
Trek to Kagbeni
Easy walk along the Kali Gandaki riverbed to the medieval village of Kagbeni — the gateway to Upper Mustang. Explore the ancient Kag Chode Thupten Samphel Ling monastery and wander the narrow alleys of this atmospheric village. Upper Mustang restricted area checkpoint ahead.
Trek to Chele
Enter the restricted zone. Follow the Kali Gandaki north through increasingly dramatic terrain. Cross the river multiple times on a trail carved into colorful stratified rock. Climb to Chele, the first village with distinctly Tibetan character — flat-roofed whitewashed houses with firewood stacked on rooftops.
Trek to Syangboche
Cross the Chele La pass and traverse through extraordinary erosion landscapes — deep red and ochre canyons, wind-sculpted pinnacles, and multicolored rock strata. Pass through Samar, a green oasis village, and continue over another pass to the small settlement of Syangboche.
Trek to Ghami
Cross the Yamda La (3,850m) with views of Nilgiri, Tilicho, and Damodar Himal. Descend through a spectacular canyon to Ghami, the largest village in Upper Mustang outside Lo Manthang. Visit the impressive mani wall — one of the longest in Nepal — decorated with thousands of carved prayer stones.
Trek to Tsarang
Cross another pass and descend to Tsarang (Charang), the second-largest settlement in Upper Mustang. Visit the impressive Tsarang Dzong (fortress) and the ancient monastery with its remarkable collection of thangka paintings, Buddhist manuscripts, and statues dating back 500 years.
Trek to Lo Manthang
Cross the Lo La pass (3,840m) for the first magical view of Lo Manthang — the walled capital of the ancient Kingdom of Lo spread across a plateau against a backdrop of snow-capped peaks. Enter through the historic gate into a medieval world of narrow lanes, whitewashed houses, and four ancient monasteries.
Explore Lo Manthang
Full day exploring the capital. Visit Jampa Lhakhang (temple of the future Buddha) with its stunning 15th-century mandalas, Thubchen Gompa with its enormous prayer hall, Choedey monastery, and the Royal Palace. Meet local artisans and monks. Watch sunset over the plateau from the city walls.
Excursion to Choser and Garphu Cave
Day trip to Choser, visiting the dramatic Jhong Cave (Luri Gompa) and the sky caves — ancient dwellings and monasteries carved into vertical cliff faces. Explore the Garphu cave monastery and Nyiphu cave with its remarkable Buddhist murals. Return to Lo Manthang.
Trek to Ghami
Begin the return journey, retracing your steps south. The return trek offers different perspectives and lighting on the dramatic canyon landscapes. Overnight in Ghami.
Trek to Chele
Continue south through Samar and over the passes back to Chele. The descent provides new angles on the eroded cliff formations and colorful rock layers.
Trek to Jomsom
Descend via Kagbeni and follow the Kali Gandaki south to Jomsom. Celebrate the completion of your Upper Mustang exploration with a farewell dinner.
Fly to Pokhara, Fly to Kathmandu
Morning flight from Jomsom to Pokhara, connect to Kathmandu flight. Transfer to your luxury hotel. Afternoon at leisure for shopping or spa.
